A playground for ambitious ideas.

Future Sandbox is a programme for developing innovative thinking, run as regular, independent creative workshops. Participants identify problems and construct ideas using creative thinking and future thinking methods.

The workshops are brainstorming parties. You are trained in idea generation in practice, and at the end you present what you made - showing you can reach a conceptual solution in a short time.

You bring the idea.
We help you build it.

Creative thinking training

Methods for generating and developing ideas, taught and practised in the session.

Future thinking methods

Ways of reading where things are going, so your idea is aimed somewhere real.

Prototype materials

A shared supply for simple alpha prototypes, granted as you need it.

3D printing support

Access and help, so a part you need is a part you can have.

Programme guidance

Someone to ask, from the first workshop to the final event.

Idea bank

Where the finished things go.

You built it - now put it on the record. What it is, how you got there, photos of the thing on the table, and a link if it lives on a screen.

It goes straight onto the wall with everyone else’s. That wall is what the jury reads, and what you browse when you are stuck on the bit someone else already solved.

Submit your prototype
Idea generator

Stuck? We will write you three.

Tell it what you study and what you care about, and it writes three prototypes for your brief on the spot - each one small enough to finish, and aimed at a real annoyance you will recognise the moment you hear it.

Nobody else in the room gets the same three. Talk any of them through, or rethink one on its own.

Voting

The room decides half of it.

For a fair result we want your opinion on who should go to the finals - not only the jury’s. So the two count equally: your vote is half the decision.

Every team gets one vote, and you cannot vote for your own team. Read what everyone entered, agree as a team, then pick the one you would most want to exist.

  • Prototype maturity

Who can join?

  • Any RTU student, with prior registration.
  • Individually or in a team - both are welcome.
  • Attend as many workshops as you like. None are mandatory.
  • Come to at least one, and you may present an idea at the final event.

Try, fail & repeat. Ideas here are starting points, not assignments - the judging cares about what you learned from the attempt, not whether you picked well at the beginning.
